The fact that the UNESCO has declared and included Cueva de las Manos (Cave of the Hands) into the World Heritage List has not been an arbitrary decision; it means that an international organization recognizes this sector as a milestone in the archeological history of South America, as a place that connects the region with its former inhabitants.

This site protects one of the greatest concentrations of cave paintings in Argentina, alongside 600 meters of walls, ceilings and even the cave, the visitor discovers more than 800 handprints (most of them belong to the left hand) painted in strong colors as: ochre, red, violet, yellow, white and black.

Other important rock art site of this province is located into the lands of “Estancuia La María” (near Puerto San Julian), on road 77 and at 150 kilometers (90 miles) from Puerto San Julian. This site protects an outstanding variety of motifs executed on two rocky formations. These paintings are between 4,850 and 12,600 years old.

Punta Walichu, nearby El Calafate, is another site that the former inhabitants used in order to execute their paintings. Nowadays and thanks to the information collected along many decades of investigation, it has been possible to restore and understand the importance of these outstanding motifs, which have benn dated in 4,000 years old.

Fauna in Santa Cruz

The 240,000 kilometers of Santa Cruz area are home to a wide variety of native species; some of them are scattered across the province in large numbers and other are endangered with extinction. The mysterious Huemul and the exotic “Macá Tobiano” belong to the last group.

On the other hand, you can visit Cabo Vírgenes (Virgenes Cape), which is the second important South American reserve of Magellanic Penguins.

In addition to the mentioned site, you can also observe examples of sea fauna and sea birds in Isla Deseada (Close to Rio Gallegos), Monte León, Comandante Piedra Buena and Puerto San Julián. It is worth mentioning the Deseado Reserve protects a wide variety of species as: Magellanic Penguins, skuas, sea gulls, commerson’s dolphins, sea lions, oystercatchers, blackchin dolphins and different varieties of sharks, which turn the estuary into a breathtaking and natural zoo.
